The Revolution Will Have Art
Art, culture, and creative action are at the heart of successful movements. The climate movement is no different.
It’s Peoples’ Earth Week and two of the leading fossil fuel resistance coalitions in the United States - People vs Fossil Fuels and Stop the Money Pipeline - have joined forces with David Solnit for the largest coordinated climate street art action!
Between April 15th and 25th (aka right now), climate activists are wheatpasting movement art on banks, buildings, community spaces, walls, and other highly visible places all across the country.
The grassroots may not have the money to take out million-dollar TV ads all the time, but we have the power to blanket the nation in posters and stickers that shine a light on the White House’s role in greenlighting new oil and gas projects and Wall Street’s financing of those projects - ahem, Willow, anyone?
There are ten different designs, each created by movement artists and in total, more than 1,300 people have signed up to receive 60,000 climate art posters for the Peoples' Earth Week. That’s a big deal!
So what’s the art?
Check it out! It’s pretty dreamy.
Why STMP and PvFF?
Our planet, our lives, and our future are threatened by climate chaos and fossil fuel production.
Fossil fuel projects are a daily health and justice disaster for communities that live near them. Together, Big Banks and the federal government hold some of the most important levers to ending the fossil fuel era.
Since the Paris Agreement was adopted in 2015, Wall Street banks have provided the fossil fuel industry with $1.4 trillion. Insurance companies provide insurance for new coal mines and oil pipelines. Asset managers and pension funds provide billions in investment capital to coal, oil, and gas companies.
Leaders like President Biden can either choose to side with people and phase out fossil fuels, or they can side with industry and drag the world deeper into a state of climate emergency.
It will take all of us acting together to make them choose people over fossil fuels.
That’s why this Earth Week, we're taking our demands to the streets through creative art and action. Peoples’ Earth Week of Climate Justice Art & Action is a kind of pushback; a widespread visual and direct action intervention to disrupt the institutions that are funding and profiting from fossil fuels and climate chaos.
Check out this op-ed that also breaks down how Peoples’ Earth Week came together and why.
